Flight time vs total tour time

The minutes in a helicopter tour’s description usually mean time in the air. The whole trip also includes getting to the terminal, checking in and, on landing tours, time on the ground. From a Las Vegas hotel the gap is large.

Parts are drawn to scale but not in time order. The not-itemized part is our subtraction from Papillon’s published figures.

Three clocksWhat a number measures

Three ways a tour time is measured

Before comparing two numbers, find out what each one measures. Operators use at least three different bases, and they are rarely labeled.

One trip, drawn in order but not to scale: hotel pickup, shuttle, check-in, flight, on the ground, return flight, shuttle back. The two separate air brackets cover the outbound and return flights; time on the ground is excluded. The other lines show terminal-to-terminal and hotel-to-hotel time.
  1. In the air

From take-off to landing back at the terminal. This is what “a 30-minute flight” normally means. Papillon’s South Rim flights are described this way.

  2. Terminal to terminal

From check-in to leaving the terminal. It adds check-in and any time on the ground, but not your journey to the airport.

  3. Hotel to hotel

From pickup to drop-off, including the shuttle. Las Vegas tours with transport often publish this figure, as Papillon does for the Grand Celebration.

The same idea, step by step

Each sequence uses only what the operator publishes. Steps with no published time are marked rather than guessed, and the steps are drawn in order, not to scale.

North Canyon · South Rim · published flight time, no total Whole-trip time: not published by the operator
  1. Travel to Grand Canyon Airport, Tusayan Time not confirmed Depends on where you stay; not included
  2. Arrive at the terminal Arrive 30 min before departure Arrive 30 minutes before the flight; this is an arrival requirement, not a measured check-in duration
  3. Flight over the canyon about 25–30 min Round trip, no landing

Back at the terminal. Steps are shown in order, not to scale. Published times are never added together.

Grand Celebration · from Las Vegas · flight time and hotel-to-hotel total Whole trip, hotel to hotel: about 4–4½ hours (published total)
  1. Hotel pickup About 60–90 minutes before departure; selected hotels
  2. Boulder City terminal Time not confirmed Check-in time not published separately
  3. Flight to Grand Canyon West Outbound and return: about 70 minutes combined; individual durations not published
  4. Canyon-floor landing about 30 min About 30 minutes on the ground
  5. Return flight to Boulder City Included in the combined 70-minute flying time
  6. Shuttle back to your hotel Time not confirmed Time not published separately

Steps are shown in order, not to scale. Published times are never added together.

Arizona time and Las Vegas time

Grand Canyon Airport and Grand Canyon West Airport keep Arizona time, UTC−7, all year. Boulder City and Las Vegas are on Pacific time and observe daylight saving. From the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March, these Grand Canyon airports are an hour ahead of Las Vegas; the rest of the year their clocks match.

What’s left outFrom the published pages

What the flight minutes leave out

Getting to the terminal
South Rim flights leave from Grand Canyon Airport in Tusayan, and transport there is not listed as included. From Las Vegas, the Grand Celebration’s shuttle picks up about 60–90 minutes before departure.
Check-in
Papillon asks South Rim passengers to arrive 30 minutes before the flight. For the Grand Celebration we found no separate check-in time, so we show it as not confirmed.
Time on the ground
Landing tours add a stop. The Grand Celebration lists about 30 minutes on the canyon floor.
The return
A hotel-to-hotel figure includes the return shuttle. Flying time includes the return flight but excludes the shuttle.

Planning a day around a flight

Set out like a cockpit checklist: the item, then what to do.

  1. Basis of the numberCheck it

Confirm what the duration includes before comparing it with another tour.

  2. Published totalUse it as it is

Do not add the flight time to it: the total already contains the flight.

  3. No published totalBuild your own

Add your travel to the terminal, the check-in time and the flight, then leave a buffer for delays.

  4. ClockArizona or Nevada

In winter, these Grand Canyon airports are an hour ahead of Las Vegas.

  5. Official pages disagreePlan for the longer

Then confirm with the seller before booking anything else that day.

We do not promise that any tour fits a particular schedule. Weather and operations can change on the day, so keep evening plans flexible if your flight is late in the day.
